Client Spotlight: K2 Construction, Performance at its highest peak
Who are the owners? - Tom Rogge and Travis Sondgeroth are the two partners that own K2 Construction as well as other affiliated businesses. They have worked together since starting K2.
What do you think makes you different from other companies similar to yours? - We are unique because of our willingness to diversify and perform various types of work. It is very difficult to develop an organization unless you can find ways to stay busy in the slow times, and increase capacity in the good times. Everything we do is related somehow, and each is a profit center.
What do you like about doing business in Lincoln? - Lincoln is an excellent place to do business for two reasons. Firstly, it is a very stable economy, with government, healthcare, UNL and agriculture making up a bulk of the local employers. This keeps people employed and stability in business. The second; it is a great central location. This allows us to bid work from Texas to North Dakota. This flexibility allows us to compete for business at a national level.
What kind of community organizations/groups are you involved with? - As a company we are very involved with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and members of the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce, Better Business Bureau, NUCA, ABC and support many other local groups and charities.
Do you have a business philosophy or mission statement? – “Mission First and people always.” It is very important at K2 that we give the client a quality project within their budget, but not at the detriment of our employees or the public at large.
What has been your most important achievement as a business? – Surviving. I believe every business owner knows how difficult it is to just make it another year. We feel like having been in business for the last 10 years and still going strong is an important achievement. This is directly attributable to the services we provide and the strong group of leaders that we have to ensure timely and safe installation.
What was the biggest turning point in your business? - The biggest turning point in our business has been name recognition. When you first start a business there are many challenges, not the least of which is getting your name out “on the street”. We have worked very hard to build “brand recognition”. When you hear utility installation or geothermal, we want those words to be synonymous with K2 Construction.
What is the most unique or interesting thing about your business that most people don’t know? - K2 Construction started out in the wireless telecommunication industry building and designing cell towers for the wireless community. It started in the basement of a home and has now grown to over 90 employees and works within a dozen construction disciplines.
What is one goal for your business that you have yet to accomplish? - We would like to endure. We understand that there are going to be incredible economic challenges in the future. Through strategic planning and implementation we hope to be able to continue to provide services to the citizens of Lincoln and surrounding areas for decades to come.
Is there anything else you’d like to add? - K2 Construction is a service based construction company that has been built around the capabilities and the desire to succeed of its employees. We would like to thank any past, present or future employees of K2 Construction for their time and energy dedicated to the company. We appreciate the fact that they are focused on providing a quality project all the while understanding that safety is the most important aspect of this company. We have emphatically stated that no project, no piece of pipe is worth telling a loved one you were injured or killed on a jobsite.
